Aug. 4, 2017 (EIRNS)–At this weekend’s annual meeting in the Philippines of the Association of Southeastern Asia Nations and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), both U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho will be in attendance, although the two are not expected to meet.
Acting Assistant Secretary of State at the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Susan Thornton, told CNN that Tillerson doesn’t plan to meet with Ri, but meetings between lower-level officials from both countries are not out of the question.
Security issues will be a key topic of discussion at the
summit. Secretary Tillerson is scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and also with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.
